There is something very deeply religious about star-gazing

or collecting stamps

or building shrines out of fly-ridden cow heads

There is something overtly pious about writing

what you found

or dissecting samples of clean, inbred mice

Something about the fear from oblivion that keeps our bodies writhing

or eyes staring at glass marbles

or hands growing meat, plants, and cultures to consume

The last laugh is for the comedian who set the premise

and left us the punchline

There is something very deeply religious about scientific inquiry
